Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and The Bookish in 2010 and was moved to Artsy Reader Girl in 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each week a new topic is chosen, this week’s is: Changes In My Reading Life.
As avid readers we like to change things up every now and then to avoid getting bored or in a slump. The changes we make usually come about as a result of the particular ‘reading phase’ that we’re in. We love going through different phases and changing them up to keep things fresh. This is not an exhaustive list but rather a list of our most common phases.
Here they are:
No Reading – Sometimes we all just need a good old break. Going cold turkey for a few weeks can recharge our batteries and bring back our spirit for reading! It’s not fun to ‘push through’ when you’re just not feeling it. Reading should never have to feel like a chore!
Poetry – Nen occasionally goes through a phase of only wanting to read poetry. Despite the fact that I don’t go through this phase, I can see why she’d be keen on taking a break from novels. Sometimes a different format is all you need to enjoy reading again and recharge. Plus, aren’t poetry book covers super cute??
Fantasy – Does anyone else ever feel the pressing need to only read fantasy books? Often Nen and I will go through this and simply avoid books from every other genre. We mostly enjoy reading young adult fantasy but are not opposed to changing things up and going a little darker for adult fantasy.
Sentimental – As our reading slump go-to, sentimental books are a favourite phase of ours. From Harry Potter, LOTR, City of Bones to Twilight we love good books that bring back fond memories of when we were younger. It’s not so much the books themselves as it is the warm, comforting feeling you get reading them. What’s your favourite sentimental read?
Slow-burn Romance – I’m literally obsessed with Mariana Zapata when I get in to my slow-burn reading phase. I’ll re-read all of her books alongside ones from K.A Tucker, Penny Reid, P. Dangelico and R.S. Grey. They make me so happy! The build up in a romance story is the best part, in my opinion. What’s not to love??
Paranormal Romance – Oh boy. I think if I was limited to only ever reading one genre again for the rest of my life Paranormal Romance is the one I’d pick. You literally have series that are 20+ books long and tropes-galore. I AM THIS GENRE. Or at the very least, my heart is. I’d sell my soul for Kresley Cole, J.R. Ward, Nalini Singh and Gena Showalter.
Stand Alone – When you’re in need of a change of reading pace it can be so satisfying to avoid starting a new series and simply delving head first in to a captivating stand alone. There’s no obligation or commitment. It’s a fun until it’s finished scenario that isn’t overly time consuming or mentally taxing. One of our favourite stand alone authors is Liane Moriarty. If you haven’t read one of her books yet… what the heck are you waiting for?
Graphic Novel – Like Nen with poetry, graphic novels are my go-to for a change of reading format. They still convey just as many heart-rending, emotional moments but can be enjoyed while eagerly taking in all of the beautiful artwork. They’re also pretty short too, as a general rule, so it’s nice to have something quick and easy to read when you’re in the mood for it.
Adaptation – Nen’s the film gal and when a new adaptation is on the horizon she’s pretty keen on snapping up the book in prep for the movie or show. Two that come to mind from recent production plans are The Shadow and Bone Trilogy and The Witcher series. Which adaptations have you prepared for?
Anti-ARC – Oh boy. If you’re an ARC reviewer I’m going to bet you know what this one’s about. Most of the time ARCs are a fun way to experience new authors and writing styles that you may not have otherwise. Occasionally, you end up at the end of a very, very long stream of ‘less than ideal’ ARC reads and just want a teensy tiny (read: a whole month) break to refuel. This is normally when we’d swap out to reading our sentimental favs!
