Top 5 Sat: Books That Cast a Spell on Us

Hi all!

Welcome to another Top 5 Saturday Reads meme. It was created by the lovely Mandy over at Devouring Books as a way to share books that we would love to read.

This week’s topic is: Books that Cast a Spell on You. There are so many great magical books that we’ve read, and stunning covers we’ve optically devoured, but this meme calls for books we want to read so it was fun time coming up with the top 5 of the lot. As our TBRs are seemingly endless it took quite a while to narrow them down!

Here they are:

Ten Thousand Doors of January – Have you seen this cover? I mean, of course you have – it’s right there. But what I mean is have you REALLY seen this cover? Have a look at all of the small little details. The cute keys hanging from the flowers. The perfect contrast of pastel shades amidst the black background. The door knob. The FONTS (I know, I know. Get over it already). The point is – we can’t. We’re in love with this cover and genuinely want to buy this book just to stare at it all day!

Winterwood – The Wicked Deep is on our TBR but we’ve been holding out on reading as it has some pretty mixed reviews. Regardless, this cover is really striking for its simplicity and the witchy element made it a shoe-in for this week’s topic. We love a good dose of mystery in a fantasy and the premise of Winterwood (see Goodreads) fits the bill perfectly!

The Nightingale – I’ve seen this book in so many stores (Jen here…) and every single time its cover caught my eye. While not completely apparent in photo, the metallic glint of the bird and vine is really striking in person. This sat neglected on my TBR for a long while until my dear friend Dini mentioned in her Down the TBR Hole post how good Hannah’s writing is. Since then, its moved up on my TBR and I’m excited to give Nightingale a try. Who could resist the hype AND that cover??

The Bone Witch – When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she’s a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training. Does it get any better than witchy intrigue? Especially with a character named Tea!

Sea Witch – Ever since her best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch .A girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore and, though the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasn’t so powerless after all. But her new friend has secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity. The graphics on this book cover are gorgeous! When you add in the back-from-the-dead premise, it’s a wonder one of us haven’t read this already!

// have you read any of these witchy books? what were your thoughts on them? //

  1. I’m still waiting for my copy of Ten Thousand Doors of January. I tried Book of the Month…but apparently, it takes weeks for them to ship it out to me in Hawaii? I could’ve gotten it much quicker through amazon. Oh well…sigh…will read it eventually! Haha

    • Ooh you’re in Hawaii? I’ve always wanted to go there! Weeks for shipping sounds like a nightmare. I’m in Aussie and it generally takes two weeks for books to get here from the US or UK but they have to travel AGES. I thought it would have been faster for you! I really hope you enjoy it when it arrives 😀 Jen

      • Yes I’m in Hawaii. Sometimes they decide to put things on a boat from California and send it to us that way LOL…so it will take 2-4 weeks 😫 sigh but all my book crate subscriptions and amazon orders get to me super quick, I just assumed Book of the Month would be the same. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  2. I had to buy ten thousand doors of January even though I read the eARC. I mean that cover is just too gorgeous to not own a copy!!! And I agree that the nightingale looks gorgeous in person. It’s got a beautiful spine too…although I’ll disagree with Dini (because lol it’s me 🙈😂) and say that the story doesn’t quite measure up to the beautiful cover! Quite a forced and manipulative sort of emotion in the writing I felt. I much preferred her book the great alone

    • HAHA, your honesty is brilliant Emer 😛 Don’t ever change! I haven’t checked out the spine for it yet but I’ll do that the next time I’m in the book store. I love spines, they’re so underrated but they’re the most focal part of a book when it’s on a shelf! I’m adding The Great Alone to my TBR now (I may as well with how long my TBR is 😛 ). I’m keen to see how her writing differs between them 🙂 Jen

      • Oh my TBR is also insane. Like I have one on GR but I haven’t even added a quarter of the books I own to it plus there’s the TBR that floats around my brain which is boundless…. ADD ALL THE BOOKS LMAOOOO XDDD <3333333

  3. YAS! Coincidentally The Nightingale is also on my list for today’s prompt. I really hope you love it, Jen! The story absolutely swept me away and left me an ugly crying hot mess by the end 😅I still need to get my hands on the Ten Thousand Doors of January but I’m also super excited to read Sea Witch (the cover is freaking gorgeous)! Love your list 😍

    • Thanks Dini! I’ve been so slack checking out posts the past few days… I’ll have a look at yours now! I love blog hopping but this week has just been a NIGHTMARE. Aww I love ugly crying (when I’m alone) it’s so cathartic and oddly satisfying 😛 The Ten Thousand Doors of Jan arrived this week and GAH, it’s GORGEOUS. My eagerness to start reading is crazy. I’ve bribed myself to finish a slow-going ARC and then I get the joy of reading it ❤ Jen

  4. Hi guys…I don’t know what happened but it turned out I wasn’t following your blog, which is ridiculous because we’ve been chatting for a while now. Just recently I met Nen at one of your posts. But now I was in my Reader and looking for your post because I know you guys do Top 5 Saturday, couldn’t find it. But anyway, I followed you again. I don’t know why this happens, this isn’t the first time I followed someone again. Maybe some WordPress glitch.

Anywaaaay, gosh the covers of these books. I want to have Ten Thousand Doors. uOut of the books in your list, it’s the only one I don’t have a physical copy yet. 🙂 🙂

      • ❤❤❤ Yes, hopefully, the content is as great as the cover aaaand, lol, it’s embarassing to say that even though I own these books, I haven’t read them, except The Bone Witch. I do like it but the 2nd book in the series is so much better. 🙂 ❤

  5. I actually leave the topic open– a lot of people do books they’ve already read. So feel free to do whatever you want! I always pick books I WANT to read because my TBR is never ending. LOL
