Books I’m (happily) not going to write a review on

It’s not often I get giddy over a book. Well, that’s a lie. I’m a book nerd at heart and it really doesn’t take much for me to go gaga over the latest ADORABLE character or original story line. Let me be more specific: It’s not often I get giddy over a book that I can’t find a fault in. I’ll admit that I can be a LITTLE bit picky when it comes to books and even ones I’ve rated 5-stars often have little niggles added in to their reviews. There are however, some books that have miraculously escape my pickiness unscathed.

This is a list of my 2019 reads to date that were so perfect, in my opinion, that I’ve avoided writing reviews on them because I have nothing to say other than I LOVE YOU and NEVER LEAVE MY SHELF. You know the feeling I’m speaking of ??? Any review I attempt to write would just be a relentless rant of all the things I loved about them…

Full disclosure: while these may be PERFECT in MY EYES that’s not to say they’re perfect overall. Everyone’s a bit different and some things that don’t bother me could be your version of a bad blind date.

Here they are:

Red, White and Royal Blue – Do I really need to introduce this book? The lingering effects of its utter sweetness are still with me every time I think about Alex and Henry. Their witty banter, sweet-as-pie support of one another and vulnerability pulled on my heart strings. Plus, I still laugh about the turkey incident! This is one I’m going to re-read for years and years.

Rock Bottom Girl – There’s something about Lucy Score’s ability to write imperfect, relatable characters that really gets my attention. She’s an auto-buy author for me but Rock Bottom Girl is my ultimate fav. Opposites attract, enemies to lovers and a charming old house… this story is honestly a romcom waiting to happen. It’s my fav indulgent read!

The Simple Wild – I’m gonna admit that I have a weakness for bearded grumpy men who have issues sharing their emotions (even though they’re secretly vulnerable). Characters like this (Johan…) are like crack for me. I can’t get enough and am instantly addicted. Calla’s strength as well as Jonah’s loyalty made this book a truly special read. Who wouldn’t want to fall desperately in love in the Alaskan wild ???

Consumed – J.R.Ward and I have been besties for years (well… in my head at least!). She writes tropes and characters that I almost always adore. I wasn’t sure whether I would love Consumed as much as her Black Dagger Brotherhood series (one of my all-time favs) but I was mistaken. I think I actually love it more ??? If that’s even possible. This is such a heart-wrenching, hopeful story of a woman who fights fires in a field dominated by men and refuses to give up – even in the face of debilitating disability. We should all aspire to have Anne’s strength.

Illuminae – I loved this book. From its unconventional format that made me feel like an investigator to its strong characters and intriguing plot twists, this was one that I unexpectedly ADORED and will re-read over and over. I found myself falling in love with the most unlikely of characters (yes… AIDAN stole my heart completely) and I really wish I could read this for the first time again.

Luna and the Lie – I’m just gonna say it: this is my favourite book EVER. I know it has faults. I don’t care. Rip is my guy and I’ll never cheat. His ‘goddamn Luna’ got me every time. Luna’s optimism even in the face of despair was one that really gained my respect. Here’s a character that stood her ground. She’s so loyal, capable and cheery. It was impossible not to like her. Plus… RIPLEY. His grumpy-ass was perfect in every way and I’ll never agree to anything different. I think I’ve re-read this about 7 times and don’t think I’ll ever tire of it.

And yes, I do realise that 5/6 of these are romance… I’m a total sap at heart!

// have you read any of these books? what were your thoughts on them? //

  1. I’ve had my eye on Illuminae for YEARS now. You’ve convinced me – it’s moving up my TBR (with uni and life it may be a while but I will get there).
Also I love romance novels, so looks like I’ve now got a few more options when I’m searching for my next read hahaha.

    • I know what you mean about uni life 🙈 books sadly take back seat for assignments and then my TBR just grows and grows… 😭😭 I hope you try Illuminae! It’s not my usual type of book but I loved it! Romances are my go-to for any mood. They make me happy haha so it’s hard to resist them 💙 Jen

  2. I totally feel you! Sometimes it is so hard to explain why you loved a book.. Just because it was perfect (for you) hahah!

    • I know! I’m glad you experience this too and it’s not just me 😂 I still felt the need to share my view in some way though… and thought this might be appropriate. Thanks for commenting! 🙏

  3. Haha I totally understand what you mean… I haven’t written reviews for some of my most favorite books too, but I’m trying to these days… but when I do manage to do it, my review is so boring and it never reflects my undying love for the book 😭😭😭
I’ve only read RWRB from your list but I can’t disagree with its inclusion… I’ve already lost count of the number of times I’ve read and listened to it and it’s only gonna increase 😍😍😍

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one who has this problem! I also feel like ‘WHAT DO I SAY??!!’ When it was glorious and gorgeous and everything else in between! ❤️❤️❤️ I’m so glad you enjoyed it too! There’s an audio?! I should try that 😍😍

  4. Ohh, there’s only two on this list that I actually knew about.
I’ve added Rock bottom girl, the simple wild and luna and the wild to my virtual wanna read!

Yep- that’s me xD though I mostly always wrote a review for the books i’ve read so far (only one I failed.. just nothing to say there) there’s always one point in the book where i’m like “!!!! LOVE!!! but oh god.. what do I say about this… what do I WRITE?!” ahah

    • Haha I’ve tried for years to tone it down… to no avail 😛 I’m not embracing the sappiness! It’s such an adorably heart-warming read. Even as someone who may not usually enjoy the genre, it’s worth a try! I hope you enjoy it if/when you get around to reading it! 😀 Jen
